Accurata delineatio celeberrimae Regionis Ludovicianae vel Gallice Louisiane ol. Canadae et Floridae Adpellatione in Septemtrionali America Descriptae quae Hodie Nomine Fluminis Mississippi vel St. Louis . . . By: Matthaus Seutter Date: 1720 (published) Augsburg Dimensions: 19.25 x 22.25 inches (49 x 56.5 cm) This remarkable map of North America spans from the French controlled northeast coast all the way to Spanish controlled New Mexico and New Spain. It depicts what was known of the territories shortly after the collapse of the speculative frenzy known as the Mississippi Bubble, and in fact the title cartouche tells the story of the investment bubble and its aftermath with a few well-chosen allegorical figures.Seutter delineates all known European and Indian settlements of the day in great detail, and includes countless names of tribes in the territories they occupied. Though in French, the place names and descriptions are easy to understand as they are close to their English language equivalents. For example, he calls a region in the northeast Terre des Grands Esquimaux, the Land of the Great Eskimos, while just to the south is a region called Terre des Petites Esquimaux. the Land of the Small Eskimos. Major roads and trails are shown, the Great Lakes are all in place, and the great system of rivers, streams and other waterways that create the Mississippi is depicted with great care. The upper left quadrant features an inset map of the Louisiana coastline, from the Mississippi Delta to Florida, providing much detail of the coastline of the area. John Law and the Mississippi Bubble The company which caused the crash had been created by a wily Scotsman named John Law, who managed to create a monopoly which completely controlled France’s colonial trade, which was called the Company of the Indies, in which he offered shares on the open market. The potential for gain seemed so great that a bubble swiftly ensued and as do all bubbles, it burst leaving countless families penniless and others seriously impoverished. The Title Cartouche The lower right quadrant features a title cartouche which tells the story of the scandalous Mississippi Bubble which brought financial ruin to so many wealthy and middle class Europeans in the early 1700s. While Faith pours riches from a large cornucopia, wealthy investors buy stock from winged cherubs and receive their shares from a beautiful maiden. Opposite them we see the ruined investors expressing grief and distress. Below the cartouche a foursome of cherubs merrily cut the shares to pieces amidst in a slightly chaotic atmosphere. Condition: This map is in B+ condition with some light damp-staining in the top corners and a small rust spot in the lower left corner within the scale of distance. Some light discoloration also exists along the centerfold. Lower left margin is trimmed, but not to the neatline. Inventory #12077 1932 S. Halsted St. #200 Chicago, IL 60608 | P: (312) 496 - 3622

ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Beautiful & Extremely Rare Antique Early 19th Century 1823 Hand-Colored Double-Page Copper Plate Engraving Map of Two U.S. States titled “Map of Pennsylvania and New Jersey by H.S. Tanner ”Publisher & Print Info: To the best of my research, it was published from the first edition of the, New American Atlas. The publisher name, ‘Published by H.S. Tanner, Philadelphia’ appears printed lower middle in the outer margin area just beneath the border (Our Map does not show the ‘Improved to 1825’ printed on it as some later maps had), and ‘Entered according to Act of Congress, the 20th. day of August 1823, by H.S. Tanner, of the State of Pennsylvania ’ (For: Henry Schenk Tanner [1786-1858]), and ‘Engraved by H.S. Tanner & Assistants.’, as appears printed very tiny lower left & lower right respectively. “An impressive and important American map of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. From Tanner's seminal American Atlas, which was a monument in the early history of American cartography. Its format and size and detail made it probably the first American made atlas to equal the work of the best European firms. The atlas was well received and this established Tanner in his subsequent position as the leading American cartographic publisher. The state maps, all but two showing two states on a sheet, are wonderful historic documents of an important and dynamic period of American history. Tanner used Washington, D.C. as the prime meridian; as he explains in the introduction to the atlas, this was primarily because of a lack of an accepted European prime meridian. Each state is carefully mapped, using the most up-to-date information of physical features, towns, roads, trails, political boundaries, and other cultural details. This map of Pennsylvania and New Jersey is typical of the quality of the maps from the atlas.” (Quoted Text From: philaprintshop) The atlas info, ‘American Atlas’, appears printed upper middle in the outer margin area just above the border. The Map is on a nice medium-heavy weight cream-colored wove paper stock.Size & Condition: The sheet size with wide margins is 24-1/4” x 31-3/8”, Image size is 20-5/8” x 27-5/8”. The Map is in VeryGood Rare+ condition for its antique age with no color fade. There is older archival framer’s tape on the center-fold to help strengthen and protect the fold, on the left & right sides (on back), due to the center-fold splitting about 2” down from the top edge which has an associated 1/2” tear spidering off of it in the top border area (very tough to see-almost overlooked it) and maybe about the same length from the bottom edge up into the border area (they don’t look like they go any farther). There is also a small 1-3/8” x 1/32” (if that) sliver area in the center-fold where it looks like the two halves of the original paper stock had an edge-flaw and didn’t match up correctly (through small portion of Perry County, through end of Cumberland County and barely into Franklin County [toward bottom of state])—it is what it is, and isn’t too noticeable at all… Extremely minimal, only three tiny 1/8” tears in the outer margin edges which are repaired from behind with archival tape—any outer margin issues are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be matted & framed out. Extremely minimal very tiny & faint foxing specks lightly scattered here & there on the sheet. Slight normal (better than average) toning of the stock from age and just a little more so around the outer margin edges. Slight small crescent creasing here & there on the sheet, as well as a few other light creases here & there in the outer margin areas, along a few outer margin edge and slight tiny dog-ear creasing in a few outer margin corners. Extremely minimal & slight outer margin edge wear with only a few tiny dents & dings here & there—also negligible. This beautiful antique early 19th C. map would make a wonderful addition to any cartography or art collection, and has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. eBay A lovely 19th-century map of California with up-to-date survey work, including railroads Scarce and notable map of California by Goddard, from the plate of the original issue of 1858, with additions.Based on Goddard’s famous large-format map of the state, this reduced version includes new survey information, including significant updates corresponding to the Railroad. A rail connection between Los Angeles and Fort Yuma has also been added. The map offers exceptional detail, including administrative (county seats, towns and ranchos) and transportation infrastructure (wagon raods, emigrant trails, railroads), along with mines and hospices Cartographer(s): Britton & Rey (1852 – 1906) was a lithographic printing firm based in San Francisco and founded by Joseph Britton and Jacques Joseph Rey in 1852. Especially during the second half of the 19th century, Britton and Rey became the leading lithography firm in San Francisco, and probably California. Among their many publications were birds-eye-views of Californian cities, depictions of the exquisite landscapes, stock certificates, and no least maps. While Rey was the primary artist, Britton worked not only as the main lithographer but was essentially also the man running the business. In addition to their own material, the firm reproduced the works of other American artists like Thomas Almond Ayres (1816 – 1858), George Holbrook Baker (1824 – 1906), Charles Christian Nahl (1818 – 1878), and Frederick August Wenderoth (1819 – 1884). Following Rey’s death in 1892 Britton passed the form on to Rey’s son, Valentine J. A. Rey, who ran it until the great earthquake and fire of 1906 destroyed most of the company’s assets.Joseph Britton (1825 – July 18, 1901) was a lithographer and the co-founder of the prominent San Francisco lithography studio Britton and Rey. He was also a civic leader in San Francisco, serving on the Board of Supervisors and helping to draft a new city charter. In 1852, he became active in lithography and publishing, first under the name ‘Pollard and Britton,’ and then ‘Britton and Rey,’ a printing company founded with his friend and eventual brother-in-law Jacques Joseph Rey. Britton and Rey became the premier lithographic and engraving studio of the Gold Rush era, producing letter sheets, maps, and artistic prints.Jacques Joseph Rey (1820 – 1892) was a French engraver and lithographer born in the Alsatian town of Bouxwiller. At the age of about 30, he emigrated to America, eventually settling in California. Here, he soon entered into a partnership with local entrepreneur and civic leader Joseph Britton. Three years later, Rey also married Britton’s sister, allowing his business partner and brother-in-law Britton to live in their house with them. Rey and Britton were not only an important part of the San Francisco printing and publishing scene but also owned a plumbing and gas-fitting firm. In the early years, both men would sometimes partner up with others on specific projects, but by the late 1860s, their partnership was more or less exclusive.

Map No. 2. Rio Colorado of the West, explored by 1st Lieut. Joseph C. Ives, Topl. Engrs. under the direction of the Office of Explorations and Surveys. A. A. Humphreys, Capt. Topl. Engrs. in Charge, by order of the Hon. John B. Floyd, Secretary of War.By: Joseph C. Ives Drawn & Frederick Wilhelm von 1858 (dated) Washington D.C.Size: 15 x 35 inches (38 x 88 cm)This spectacular map, the earliest scientific map of the Grand Canyon region, shows the course of the Colorado River across what was then New Mexico Territory, and would later become Arizona, with Utah Territory in the north, today parts of Nevada, from the California border to Fort Defiance, and is the first accurate representation of the Grand Canyon to be printed on a map. It also marks the overland route taken by the Ives expedition from Beal’s Crossing (day 59) to the south rim of the Grand Canyon (day 73) through the San Francisco Forest (Flagstaff, AZ), to the Moquis Pueblos, ending in Ft. Defiance on day 103.The beautifully engraved map map, was published in 1861 in Joseph C. Ives’s Report Upon the Colorado River of the West, an account of the first major exploration up the Colorado River from its mouth in the Gulf of California. The primary objective of the expedition was to chart the Colorado river's course and conduct a hydrographic survey that included accurately mapping the river and its tributaries in the region. A secondary objective instructed Ives to "acquire knowledge of the surrounding country." Ives purchased a steamboat in Philadelphia, had it disassembled and shipped to the Isthmus of Panama, where it was moved via ship railroad to the Pacific coast and then shipped north to the mouth of the Colorado River, where it was reassembled. The expedition started on New Year’s Eve, of 1857, and gathered new and updated information on the people, flora, fauna, climate, and other aspects of the region. The map is the work of Frederick W. von Egloffstein, who developed a special process to produce this finely engraved map. The map locates Fort Defiance, Campbell's Pass, Zuni, Moquis (Hopi) Pueblos, San Francisco Springs (Flagstaff), Los Vegas, the Mormon Road, many native tribes, and much more. It also shows several important exploration routes and trails, including The Old Spanish Trail, Whipple's trail of 1854 and Beale's trail. Many notations throughout Condition: Map is in good condition, a sharp print on clean, mildly foxed paper, with very little darkening along the folds.
